Aromatherapy for Dogs

LifeFORCE essential oil blends are the best choice when it comes to making sure you are diffusing pet-safe oils.

Many people are nervous about using essential oils on and around their dogs. Given how strong these oils are, it's understandable. But if you purchase high quality oils and use them correctly, they can be very beneficial.

Our LifeFORCE blends are made of 100% pure, natural, therapeutic grade oils, created with the help of veterinarians and aromatherapy experts. Our blends are made in Canada by professionals.

Our oils are extracted by steam distillation — the most authentic, time-proven and safe method of extracting essential oils. It does not always provide the highest yield of oil from the batch of plant materials, so the oils will come in small bottles at a higher price.

Oils derived by chemical solvent extraction will typically be less expensive because it's easier to get a larger yield of oil from a batch of plants. However, the chemical residue makes the oil less pure, less desirable and something which should not be ingested. We would avoid the use of chemical solvent extracted oils.

The basics

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a lot more than making your dog smell pretty. Essential oils are the potent liquids which are derived from the breakdown of the internal structure of various plants. They have extremely powerful medicinal properties.

These oils can be used therapeutically for the treatment of both physical and behavioral issues in dogs. Essential oils, when used to treat dogs, should always be diluted as directed (usually at a ratio of 1:100) in carrier oil. Essential Oils blended with carrier oil can be used topically, internally, or through inhalation.

Many of these oils have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, or detoxifying abilities and can be emotionally stimulating or sedating.

When used as directed, essential oils can be extremely beneficial to a dog's overall health and well-being.

How to use them

Methods of Application

Topical Use

Our essential oil blends, once diluted with your carrier oil, can be applied topically via massage. The oils penetrate the skin and allow the medicinal qualities to be absorbed and carried through the bloodstream.

Depending on the carrier oil you choose, additional benefits to your dog's coat, skin, and nails can be gained along with the benefits from the massage itself.

Internal Use

We do not recommend using any essential oils internally without the supervision of a holistic veterinarian. Though essential oils offer many benefits, they are potent and can be dangerous if used incorrectly.

We do carry a specially formulated Stress Relief Spray and Total Oral Care Spray which can be safely used internally by spraying directly into your dog's mouth or adding it to your dog's water.

Inhalation

There are various means of treating your dog through Aromatherapy. Remember to always give your dog an escape route from the scent and to use for no longer than two weeks at a time (allowing your dog at least a week's rest from scents).

One method of safe aromatherapy is the use of our blended and diluted essential oil sprays. They can be applied to your dog's bedding, your hands before grooming, lightly on your dog's coat, or a variety of other applications.

Our 100% pure essential oil blends can also be used through a room diffuser. Our Hydrosol Room Diffuser is a water based system designed to gently diffuse our essential oils at a very low ratio throughout an area.

This diffuser is designed to be safe for use in households which are shared with cats, birds, or other small animals, as they can be even more sensitive than your canine companion.
